Basic configuration

Choose a monitor.

You will find a monitor to display the video depending on three key elements. If your DVR has HDMI, then you'll find a monitor that uses this option. Resolution: After powering on the device, you will see the main screen. Right-click to get the screen menu from which you will access the main menu window. Input your login details to open.

Click on settings while in the main menu window. Here, find the “Display” option.

You can change the number of items in this window. However, find the resolution key and tune it according to your monitor capabilities.

Save your resolution settings by finding the Save button at the bottom of the window. Note that you will only receive images after choosing a compatible resolution. For instance, if your monitor supports 1080p, then your best pick should be 1920x1080 – here's where you'll receive the best picture quality.

Date and time.

Date and time recordings are vital. Therefore, you will need to ensure it is set before you move on to other elements.

Right-click on the main screen to access the main menu from which you will locate “settings” and left-click on it.

Choose a time, and date formats then set them accordingly.

Locate settings, then display.

Select the camera name, then modify it by applying custom names you want, such as office 9.

Click save at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

Record configuration

You always have the option of following the feed live. However, if you wish to record the proceedings, ensure that your hard drive is installed and has sufficient storage space. The focus now shifts to the quality of the surveillance videos. If you want the best version, consider configuring this in the settings.

Right-click on the screen to get the main menu.

Enter the login initials and enter "OK."

Find the “settings” icon from the main menu.

In the settings window, you will find the "ENCODE" icon from the list presented. Enter the encoded page.

The objective is to apply a new setting for the recording resolution for all camera channels. Therefore, click on the down arrow beside the "channel." Click on the “ALL” button at the bottom of the dropdown.

The recommended resolution for recording is D1 (704x480). Therefore, select the arrow next to "resolution." Click on the D1 option. The frame rate will automatically change.

Your next objective is to ensure a high-quality video with low compression by changing the bitrate. Click on the arrow next to the "Bit Rate(Kb/S)" option. From the dropdown menu, choose '1024' unless if you are on a FULLD1-Pro, then you will select '2048'.

Now select “Save” at the bottom right corner of the screen to capture your settings.

DVR setup for internet viewing

There being multiple ISP’s in the market, this guide herein may have variations depending on your specific provider. However, it would help for a considerable number of DVRs.

Requirements

Other than a DVR and a Monitor, you shall require a Router, CAT5 Network cables, high-speed internet.

Ensure that your router is appropriately set and that you can receive the internet on your devices. Also, ensure that you can access your router's admin page. So, go ahead and run the network cables to connect your DVR and the router. Follow these steps:

a. Configure a LAN IP for your DVR on the Router.

Go to; DVR Main Menu > Settings > Network. Here, look for, and highlight the box labeled DHCP. After checking the box, the fields, IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway will become blank. Click "Save" and exit the page.

Now, go back to the Network window. You will notice that the fields are now populated. Under the IP Address field, copy the number herein and keep it for you shall need it later.

If the fields are empty upon returning to the Network window, switch off the DVR, and back on. Now access the page, you will find the lots with numbers.

NOTE: once you have copied these numbers, i.e., the LAN IP, then you should uncheck in the DHCP box and click "Save." This ensures that the figures saved remain permanently saved. Otherwise, leaving as it was will mean that every time the DVR turns on, the router will assign a new LAN IP Address.

b. Ensure you can log into the DVR from the computer within your LAN.

Type the IP Address you recorded earlier in the computer’s browser search panel. Install any add-ons or active-x files that you may be prompted to download. A login window will be displayed from which you will need to insert your credentials. You should note that you cannot use the previous log in details since they were only meant to directly access the DVR and not from the internet. You can only use these details after you have granted your DVR full admin access to use all the remote software configurations. Therefore, go to Main Menu > Advanced > Account. From here, you can edit DVR permissions and other user accounts.

c. Configure your DVR and Router to receive feeds from a different LAN remotely.

Monitoring your DVR from a different location may prove challenging if it is not well configured. Typing in your IP Address won’t work. Therefore, you will have to get a WAN IP. Get your WAN IP Address from www.ipchicken.com. Write this number down, and figure out if it is static or dynamic. Ask your internet service provider (ISP) for the kind of IP Address you are having.

Configure your router for port forwarding

Port forwarding allows your router to be seen from a network outside the LAN so you can monitor your DVR remotely.

Access the port forwarding section on your router – contact your service provider if you cannot find it.

Add a custom service to this platform. You will then forward ports 80 and 37777 to your DVR’s local IP.

For the 80 port, custom-name it under the service name. Select TCP/UDP for the service type and input 80 in the starting port. Input 80 in the ending port as well. Enter your DVR's LAN IP in the Server IP Address field. Do the same thing for port 37777, and click "Apply."

Before you rest and count your success, there’s one more thing you need to do. You have to check if the two forwarded ports (80 and 37777) are open and accessible.

While in your local area network? Visit web www.canyouseeme.org. You will find your WAN IP listed as well as a field to input your port. Enter the two port numbers independently. If they are correctly configured, the page will display a text “Success” at the bottom.

Failure to see this notification or you see an error, then the likely occurrence is that your ISP is blocking access. Contact them to unblock those two specific ports. Otherwise, if they gave you different ports, then you will need to re-configure your DVR with these new ports using the same tutorial.

How to configure DYDNS IP users

- Insert your router's IP Address in your computer's web browser. This IP, together with its credentials, shall be found on your initial device's documentation. However, you can use the website as in the previous discussion to get your IP.

Locate the port forwarding menu after logging in.

Type your device's IP in the field provided. Now, configure the ports as in the previous tutorial. For instance, type "3389" into the TCP field, then click "Save".

Follow this up by checking access. You can do this by typing your network’s IP in a WAN address.

Now proceed to set up your hostname.

Log into your Dyn account or create an account.

Find the services tab and click DynDNS Pro.

Select “Add A New Hostname”

Type in a hostname of your preference and select a domain from the dropdown menu beside it. This hostname shall be used as your web address. Look for “Service Type” in this field, locate and check the “Host with IP Address beside box beside it.

Type in your external IP in the “IP Address” field. Click “Activate” you can also find out your external IP Address through CheckIP.com. On a computer within your LAN.

Wait for a few minutes as your new hostname activates. Follow this up by testing. Type the name in a web browser outside your LAN. If you don’t see an error, then your gadget is working fine.

DDNS Camera App

This chapter guides you on how to get your android or iOS devices installed with the necessary software so that the feed can be viewable from anywhere, and not necessarily in your local area network.

Firstly, we need to configure the sub-stream on your DVR to enable your cell to receive and stream flawlessly. Go to the main menu > settings > encode. Select the dropdown arrow beside "Channel," then select "All." Look for a column that captures "Extra-stream." Select the dropdown arrow beside QCIF, then select CIF to set the resolution to CIF. Under the CIF, select the dropdown arrow and set the frame to 3. Ensure that the bitrate type is set at CBR. Now set the bitrate to 96.

Now, go to Main Menu > Advanced > Accounts. In this window, set the username you would like to use for logins into the phones. Now, modify the user. Ensure that the option “Reusable” is selected under this page. Save your changes and exit.

Your sub-stream is already configured. The next step is to download the software and install it on the android or iOS phones. There are two apps, one for each device. gDMSS Lite is the application compatible with android devices, while iDMSS Lite is for iPhones. You can download these apps from play and apple stores, respectively.

Go ahead and open the app and installation. You will see the "Device Manager" option. Select this option, then look for the add button in the top right corner of the resultant window. Make the following changes.

DVR Title: choose any custom name you want to call your DVR.

Server: enter your WAN IP Address here.

Port: Here, you will enter the TCP port number you used during port forwarding. We used 80 and 37777 as an example in this article in the previous discussion. If you entered a different code, then enter it here.

Username: set this field with the username you used to log into your DVR from a remote location.

Password: enter the password you used to log into your DVR from a remote location.

Max Channel: set to the maximum number of channels that your DVR can sustain.

Once this is set successfully, click on the Save button on the top of the page, then press back.

On the main screen, click on “Real-Time Monitor." Then click on the plus sign. Select the device you have created then the channel you want to view. You can do this for each additional channel on the screen. So, you now have your live feed.
